Sanford is going to China and other things

The big news out of the Governor's office officially is that the Governor is going to China. The Governor is heading a delegation of South Carolinians going to China to try to win some economic development for the state. The list of those going are the who's who of Sanford supporters, from the business sector and the General Assembly.

I do not have anything against the Governor to China. Indeed, I wish him well. However, his stewardship over the Department of Commerce has become a joke among those in the know. Just ask the people of Greenville County how well Sanford works for economic development as they struggle to keep about a 1000 jobs at the Donaldson Center.

One upstate elected official made it clear to me. "I have never seen a Department of Commerce so political and so against economic development. It is unbelievable how inept they are under Sanford."

Putting that aside, fellow blogger and former Sanford staffer Will Folks on his blog, FITS News, made clear that in 2008 Sanford is going to openly go after General Assembly members who disagree with the Governor. Folks makes like this is some sort of revelation. I hate to break it to him, but politicos in the know are not stupid. The Governor's allies went hard after folks in the General Assembly in 2006 via South Carolinians for Responsible Government. They had mixed results. But, there was more out of state money in the General Assembly races than ever before. And, all of those out of state donors were Sanford allies in that they support his causes or gave to him.

So, to claim that Sanford has never gotten involved in legislative races is down right silly. We ain't stupid, Slic Willie.

Back to the trip to China. The list of travelers tells me what I already know. This Governor and his people are more about scoring political points than getting things done. Getting a good trip for his supporters seems more important than getting some real jobs for South Carolina.

If that was not the case, the Governor would stay home and straighten out the mess that is his Department of Commerce and not get into pissing contests with the House Speaker over making sure Greenville County keeps a big number of high paying jobs.

  1. Perhaps Wil's diet is deficient in lead?

Tangent on the serious side, is the Nan Ya plastic plant, south of Lake City and deep in the Sixth District owned by Bejing? Would it be cheaper for PRC party bosses, given the costs of shipping, to build factories with illegal imigrant labor in the US and staff them with illegal imigrant labor to do jobs that (some) americans won't do? I know that on the bottom line, slave/prison labor in Red China is cheaper than hiring illegals in the US, but would it save the shipping costs enough to cover that margin?

  2. Sanford cares only for Sanford.

His commerce departent serves Sanford, not us.

He is a joke. The people are beginning to catch on to what the insider know...in 6 months time he will be toast.

  3. from a posting in the Chas paper this AM...

You need to do a web search on ChangeSCNow, LLC before you deify it. I did when it filed the lawsuit. It was not there, as such. It was mentioned in other websites which provided an address & phone number for the group. I did a reverse phone search and found The Rackes Group, a consulting co. that does work for the legislature, dept. of education and others. Reading the Greenville News, I've since learned ChangeSCNow has an upstate attorney. But based there, I don't know because it is yet another LLC hiding it's real membership.
Why doesn't it bother people that an entity that does not have to identify itself can sue government or anybody? This is the antithesis of what should be going on in democracy. Why are these groups so afraid of the sunshine?

How can Mark Sanford fool so many people, especially journalists. I voted for him because Jim Hodges had to go, but I worried that he might be too pathologically rigid to accomplish much. Wow, was I right.

I was working for a cabinet agency 2 years ago when I wrote a letter to Sanford about serious problems there. I could take forever and give you the details of how poorly Sanford's agency is working, but he did have them initiate an investigation. The agency was to report back to the staff in the department they were investigating at the conclusion. They never did. Nobody in the governor's office ever responded to me. They problem continues. Who cares? Not Sanford.

Therefore, why should we want "reform" when, obviously, Sanford can't manage as well as the legislature. He can't even manage his web site at SC.GOV. Go there and see how the unemployment "roles" have decreased during his administration.

He is grossly incompetent and I cannot figure out why he is considered so brilliant. He has spent the majority of his working life as a maggot-on-the-taxpayer elected official of a government he doesn't believe in. What does that tell you? I wish someone would do some research on how he performed in the brief time he supposedly spent in the private sector. I bet he was a failure there, too.

One last thing, both ReformSC and ChangeSCNow are going to turn out to be out-of-state funded, Grover Norquist worshipping groups to tell us poor, stupid natives what to do. What can we expect when we elect a carpet bagger?
